Dharmasthala is an Indian temple town on the banks of the Nethravathi River in the Belthangadi taluk of the Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka, India. The town is famous for its 800 year old Dharmasthala temple.

Initially this place was a small village by the name Kuduma in Mallarmadi. A Jain Bunt chieftain, Birmanna Pergade and his wife Ammu Ballalthi resided here in a house known as Nelliadi Beedu. According to the legends, the four guardian angels of Dharma visited the chieftain in disguise and were received well by the chieftain. The chieftan vacated the house for the angels to pursue their agenda of preaching Dharma. Till date, the worship of the Dharma Daivas continues in this house. It is also said that the Dharma Daivas appeared in the dreams of the chieftain asking him to build different shrines for each one of them. Thus, you will find a different shrine for each of the four Dharma Deivas. The priests appointed for these shrines requested the chieftan to build a Shivalinga besides the Daivas. Shortly afterwards, the Dharmasthala Manjunatha Temple was erected around the Shivalinga.

Dharmasthala is surrounded by other kshetras like Kukke Subramanya, Horanadau, Udupi and Sringeri. Mangalore is just 65 kms away and there are several scenic and piligrimage sites around Mangalore as well.

Dharmasthala temple

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is regarded as the primary deity. The temple also houses shrines of Manjunatha, Ammanavaru, Chandranath and the Dharma Daivas(guardian spirits of Dharma). On an average, the flow of pilgrims is about 10,000 people a day. Annadana at the famous Annapurna dining hall is a unique feature of Dharmasthala, where a mechanized kitchen serves a simple meal of rice, dal, vegetables and buttermilk to all the pilgrims. There are guest houses with modern amenities too.

Ganesha Chaturthi, Navaratri and Deepavali are celebrated with grandeur at Dharmasthala. The annual festival or carnival called Pattanajae Jatre is held in April every year before the onset of monsoons. During the month of Kartika (November-December), Lakshadeepa, the festival of lights is celebrated. You may plan your trips to coincide with any of these festivals to experience the pomp and splendor of these celebrations.

Museums and Antique cars

The Manjusha museum near the temple has a collection of antique swords and armory. Devotees can also have a look at the antique cars and the horse drawn carriages exhibited outside the museum in a shed. These vintage vehicles are maintained by the temple trust of Dharmasthala Manjunatha Temple.

Bahubali Statue

Bahubali statue is located near the temple on a small hill and it is revered by Jains as a symbol of sacrifice. It is about 39 feet(12m) high and weighs about 174 tonnes

Annappa Betta

This hill is also called as Badinede Betta. The Shrine and dwelling place of four Dharma Daivas – Kalarahu, Kalarkayi, Kumaraswamy and Kanyakumari is situated on this hill.
